Evaporative Crystallization

Evaporation crystallization is a method to separate and purify solids from a liquid solution by heating the solution to evaporate the solvent (usually water). As the solvent evaporates, the solute concentration increases until it reaches saturation and begins to form crystals. This method works well for substances whose solubility doesn’t change much with temperature. Crystal purity and shape depend on factors like crystallization rate and particle size. It is commonly used for producing salts, sugars, and organic compounds.

Working Principle

First, the solution is heated to evaporate the solvent, which increases the concentration of the solute. As the solvent evaporates, the solute concentration exceeds its solubility, leading to a supersaturated state. Tiny solute particles begin to form nuclei, which act as the starting points for crystal growth. More solute molecules gradually deposit onto these nuclei, allowing them to grow into larger crystals. Finally, the crystals are separated from the remaining solution using filtration or centrifugation.
